District – Andy Gower reported an email phishing attack from an emai address he recognized. Talked to vendor whose address was the sender and researched Gmail phishing attacks. Notified staff again about not opening any attachments to email which have the least bit of doubt. Updated Cyber Security page.

Middle School – Canon copier cannot be pinged. Trying to find out what is going on with this printer. Emailed Peder Angvall.

District – continuing with efforts to resolve Carbonite and Symantec issues on admin server. Joshua from RecTec deleted the Carbonite backups and found that two backup selections were hanging up and replicating. This is now resolved. The message from Symantec regarding “file reputation error” is not indicated from any of the system reports and he is going to restart the server this afternoon to see it the message stops. He also said that the port that is built into the motherboard is deactivated since it is just for system use.

Marie Prewett – asked that I check to see why she can’t print to the middle school Canon copier. I couldn’t ping that device or log into it’s web interface, so I took a laptop there and tested the network cable and found that DHCP worked and the connection was good. I restarted the copier, but still couldn’t ping it. Peder Angvall said that either the subnet mask or the gateway on the copier was wrong. I checked that and corrected the subnet mask. Now I can ping the copier. Will ask Marie to try printing to it again.

Don Gallagher – reported an issue with Chrome where he couldn’t search for anything without a webfilter error message stating that the address couldn’t be found. I noticed that the browser was appending “/gmail” to the end of anything he typed. I don’t know how that happened, but I quit Chrome and started again, then went to a known address by clicking a link. The problem went away. Wierd, huh?

Admin Server – got quote from RecTec. Filled out PO and got it approved. Rectec technician will attempt to perform both tasks remotely.

District – a facutly member came to me this morning and reported that a nearby school district had a problem yesterday with ransomware. I researched precautionary measures and sent a message to all users providing preventative steps. Will prepare a page on Cyber Security for the web site.

In the rumor mill today is a report that one of our local public schools just experienced a ransomware attack. This means that their data is being held hostage until they pay an unknown party a large sum of money in an untraceable currency such as bitcoin. Despite numerous safeguards we have in place, this could easily happen in Konawa. 

Here's what you should do:

  • Never open an email from a sender you don't recognize (when in doubt -> delete)
  • Never, never, never click an email attachment you aren't 100% sure about (I'm serious)
  • If a website takes over your browser, not letting you close browser windows, turn off your computer and contact me
  • Backup any data you deem important to Google Drive
  • Backup any data you deem important to a flash drive (don't always use the same flash drive)
  • Don't leave your flash drive plugged into your computer when you aren't using it.
  • Never pay the ransom

Even these precautions don't have guarantees. This is a crazy world we live in and it's getting crazier. We can't afford to be naive or ignorant. I started a web page today to document Cyber Security concerns. It may be a few days before I get it going, but I'll try to load it up with accurate and useful information.

Amanda Lampkin – reported three students who could not login to their student accounts. Corrected password error and tested.

Lori Kiker – reported a SmartBoard connection issue. After checking cable connections it seems okay.

LeeAnn Duck – requested that an update to the Wengage system be applied. Will do this on Tuesday.

District – sent a message to Tom Burgess from ProPresenters about moving forward with the proposal to put a ceiling mount projector in the PAC

Admin – Contacted Bill Shaw at Rectec to describe issues with Symantec and Carbonite on admin server. He will contact me with an appointment time for a tech to come out next week.

District – tracked down the last of my email contacts to confirm that they are receiving mail after the domain change by OneNet regarding mail tagged as spam

Sandra Johnson – MacBook had damage to case and screen. Transferred her data to new MacBook Air.

Mac Lab – installed exercise app and iBook from WeHeartSwift for Swift and Xcode programming tutorial.
